Navajo Youth Camp by Jesse Liggett

We arrived in Pinon at the Tsosie's on Friday, May 22, 1998. We setup two tipis and an army tent that would be used for crafts and the Sunday service. Our family slept in the small 14' tipi. We used the large 22' tipi for an opening service led by Alphonso Nez. He also did some sand paintings for us in the large tipi.

For an Eagle Scout project I setup an outhouse at Old Cedar for the church. I had pre- assembled the outhouse at home but had to dig a hole for it in Pinon. Some of the boy scouts had also helped me paint the structure before we left home.

We had about 40 Navajo children present for the youth camp. For recreation we did volleyball, kickball, basketball and baseball. We had church classes and craft classes. In crafts we made two beaded necklaces, a mug, a windsock and a copper picture.

I was able to go hiking up the mesa at the Tsosie's with Adam Cappo The view from the top was terrific.

Leslie Tsosie, who was sick, was administered to twice while we were there. On Sunday we had a Sacrament service.  The Navajo seemed to really enjoy our campfires. We did some skits and songs for them. Monday morning we packed our things and headed for home and a hot shower.
